Lead Diacetate Trihydrate Production Process


Lead(II) acetate (Pb(CH3COO)2), also known as lead acetate, lead diacetate, plumbous acetate, sugar of lead, lead sugar, salt of Saturn, and Goulard's powder, is a white crystalline chemical compound with a sweetish taste. It is made by treating lead(II) oxide with acetic acid. Like other lead compounds, it is toxic. Lead acetate is soluble in water and glycerin. With water it forms the trihydrate, Pb(CH3COO)2·3H2O, a colourless or white efflorescent monoclinic crystalline substance.


Production method


1. Lead oxide reacts with acetic acid. The lead oxide was dissolved in 80% acetic acid until it was soaked and filtered. A small amount of acetic acid was added to the filtrate and evaporated to a relative density of 1.40. Cooling, filtration, drying, to obtain lead acetate.


2. Dissolve lead oxide (II) in 50% hot acetic acid until saturated. After filtration, a little acetic acid was added to the filtrate, which was evaporated to a relative density of 1.40 on the water bath. Filter and dry between layers of filter paper to obtain pure products.


3. The lead oxide was dissolved in hot acetic acid, and after filtration, acetic acid was added into the filtrate for reaction, and the relative density was 1.40. Cooling, separating crystallization, drying, pure lead acetate.


4. Through steam to boil 100kg distilled water for 15min, to remove carbon dioxide, and then add 0.5kg industrial acetic acid and 100kg industrial lead acetic acid, continuous through steam to completely dissolve the lead acetate, and then add a small amount of industrial activated carbon, stir evenly, filter while hot (three-layer filter paper) The filtrate obtained crystallizes after cooling, is centrifuged and dried, and is laid flat in the oven at 30 ~ 40℃, then turned and crushed from time to time.
