1. Product Description:

Lead nitrate, IUPAC Chinese name lead nitrate (II), is a nitrate of lead, usually colorless crystal or white powder. Unlike other bivalent lead salts, lead nitrate dissolves in water. Metallic lead or lead oxide is usually reacted with nitric acid to produce lead nitrate, which is then further synthesized into other lead compounds. Historically, lead nitrate was known as Plumb dulcis in the Middle Ages, when the production of lead nitrate from metallic lead or lead oxide by nitric acid was small-scale. By the 19th century lead nitrate was being produced commercially in Europe and the United States, where it was used as the main ingredient in pigment, but was gradually replaced by the less toxic titanium dioxide because of its toxicity. Other industrial uses are as heat stabilizers in nylon, polyester and thermal imaging paper coatings. Lead nitrate has been used in cyanide refining since about 2000. Lead nitrate is toxic as an oxidant and is classified as a Class 2A carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. It must therefore be handled and stored with appropriate safety measures to prevent inhalation, ingestion and skin contact. Restrictions on the use of lead nitrate are still under review because of its dangers.
